Medinī Jyotiṣa, and what the record actually shows

Medinī Jyotiṣa is the branch that reads the sky for nations rather than for people. It is also the branch where a claim is easiest to make and hardest to check — so Horā checked. Classical mundane indicators were applied to dated, sourced world events and compared with how often the same condition holds on an ordinary day. What follows is that arithmetic, including every place it found nothing.

The price (argha) and motion chapters of the Bṛhat Saṁhitā link anomalous motion of the significator of trade to disturbance in prices. Retrogression and a 12° combustion orb are Horā’s stated operationalisation.

Windows and orbs are Horā’s stated conventions, printed with each condition. The classical texts describe these configurations qualitatively; the number of days and the degrees of orb are decisions this platform made and discloses, not figures the texts give.

“Above” and “below” are directions, not verdicts — a war falling more often inside a window is not a good thing, and Horā does not colour it as one. A row is reported as too few to read when fewer than five events fall inside the window: that floor is this platform’s own display convention, disclosed here, because with three or four hits a ratio swings wildly on a single event. Rows reading near the baseline are the honest majority, and they are printed at the same size as the rest.

The one mundane rule specific enough to fail

Most mundane statements are too loose to test. One is not: the Bṛhat Saṁhitā’s earthquake chapter assigns each maṇḍala of nakṣatras to a particular quarter of the day or night, and says a quake belongs to the quarter of the maṇḍala holding that day’s Moon. That is a prediction with four possible answers, so chance is one in four, and it can be checked against every recorded earthquake whose time is documented.

Of the 23 recorded earthquakes that carry a documented time, 6 struck in the quarter the rule expects. Chance alone would put the expected number near 6.

near the baseline — no signal

Bṛhat Saṁhitā, ch. 32 (bhūkampa-lakṣaṇa), v. 32.07 — tr. N. C. Iyer, 1884. The Vāyu, Agni, Indra and Varuṇa maṇḍalas preside over the first, second, third and fourth quarter of day and of night respectively. The actual quarter is taken from local mean solar time at the epicentre with a 06–18 day — Horā’s stated simplification; the text divides true day and true night.

Indian mundane practice reads the country from the chart of the midnight of independence. Horā casts that chart and lists which Vimśottarī period was running at each recorded Indian event. It applies no score to the result and draws no conclusion from it — the table is here because it is the material a practitioner would want to see, not because it demonstrates anything.

Sixteen events are far too few to conclude anything in either direction, and the table should be read as a record, not as evidence.

What these numbers cannot tell you

Published in full, at the same size as the findings, because a limitation printed in small type is a limitation being hidden.

  • The events were chosen, not sampled.They are famous events with a verifiable date and source. No event entered the set because the sky was interesting, but many real events never entered it because they never became famous. That is selection bias, and it cannot be argued away.
  • Forty-odd events is a small sample.Every category holds fewer than fifty events. One event moving in or out of a window shifts a ratio visibly. This is why the counts are printed rather than percentages, and why thin rows are marked instead of read.
  • The windows and orbs are decisions.The classical texts say effects follow an eclipse; they do not say fourteen days. Every number in a condition is this platform’s stated convention, and a different convention would give different counts.
  • Correspondence is not causation.Even a row well above the baseline would show only that events and a condition co-occurred more often than ordinary days do on this particular set. It would not show that one produced the other.
  • Most rows found nothing.That is the honest headline. Several classical mundane claims came out at or below their chance baseline, and those rows are on this page at full size — reporting only the rows that rose would make every number here worthless.
  • Nothing here is a forecast.This page reports what already happened. Horā does not issue predictions about wars, disasters or markets, and a condition being in force today says nothing whatever about tomorrow.

These are curated famous events, so selection bias applies: no event was left out because the sky was quiet that day, but many were left out because they never became famous. A ratio near one is no signal. Nothing here predicts any future event, and nothing here says that a planetary configuration caused anything to happen.

Where a text says “effects follow the eclipse”, Vedic Horā states the exact window it used and calls it a stated convention, not scripture.

How Horā computes it

Planetary positions come from a high-precision astronomical ephemeris, sidereal with the Lāhirī (Citrapakṣa) ayanāṁśa, and bhāvas are whole-sign as in the Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra. Sunrise and sunset are computed by rise-transit for your exact coordinates rather than assumed, which is why timings shift correctly with your latitude and the season.

The interpretation is not written by a language model. Each statement is a digitised classical rule and arrives with the text it came from, so you can go and check it. Where traditions differ, the convention Horā follows is stated in the reading itself.

Are you predicting future wars?

This section shows how the classical mundane indicators of Bṛhat Saṁhitā have corresponded to the recorded past — eclipses, stations and conjunctions counted against wars, earthquakes and market days, with the arithmetic and the baseline shown. Read it as the texts ask to be read: indications weighed against the record, so you can judge their strength yourself.

What counts as an “event”?

Only dated, publicly sourced occurrences above a stated magnitude threshold. The list and its thresholds are published, because a movable definition would let anyone prove anything.

Did the classical rules hold up?

Partly. Some indicators came out above their chance baseline; several came out flat. Both are shown, because reporting only the hits would make the numbers worthless.
